Let NPR be decided by the marketplace I was interested in responding to the letters published on Oct 11 about the subsidizing of National Public Radio. It is a flawed analogy in thinking that if government wants to uphold free speech, it should finance it. By this reasoning, we should fund churches, theatres, and restaurants because it wants to uphold religious liberty, freedom of expression and the free market. If it really wants to uphold free speech, it would stay out of the question altogether. Actually, this is another case of taxpayer money being used to finance special interests; it is not for the "public benefit" and certainly not for the general welfare. Those that have the gold make the rules. If government dictates what group gets money, and consequently decides what can and can't be done, said or written, how is that upholding free speech? Let the people decide. If Natalie Maines says something that offends some people, they are free to express their disagreement and burn the Dixie Chicks CDs. If you agree with Natalie Maines, then you should be free to express it and debate your point of view. But keep the government and its long arm out of it. Chris, I posted your letter to the Letters to the Editor forum at http://www.lptn.net/ (website plug), but it appended your letter with my signature. I've asked Jonathan to fix that by removing my sig, but it was too good a letter not to get posted. Great job! Pro libertate, Ray

What is the actual legal status of the public broadcasting systems and stations, PBS, NPR, and the one WSMC in Collegedale belongs to (its not NPR but is still a public system)? I have put forth the point before that pb systems and pb local stations should be giving to the people in the form of shares and let the share holders decide what to put on the individual stations, a group may decide their station will have commerical broadcast half of the time and open access to anyone that wants to speak the other time. With the coming of digtial broadcasting Channel 45 will have a possible 4 channels so open access, commercial and educational programming could exists at the same time. When putting forth this idea a statist liberal posted on a board that I was against property rights because I wanted to take control of public broadcasting away from the managers. I ask for clarification but never got it from him. My question was who owns the stations, and the systems? Does the charters specify or imply public ownership or control, common control, partly or wholly government control or board and manager control for the benifit of the public? If the last is true who appoints the boards? If the last is true does the charter specify or imply property rights?

>I've asked Jonathan to fix that by >removing my sig Hmm...ok, well the sig is pulled up dynamically based on who is the poster, so I can't remove it per se ... have to actually change who the script thinks posted it ... so technically this is fraud, but I guess Chris won't press charges? : ) http://www.lptn.net/forums/letters/1497/
