Freedom of speech given by Creator

There is something that I wish you would clarify. The editor's March
14 column said, "The First Amendment grants the press great
freedom ... ."I don't exactly see it that way.

Freedom of speech and expression are liberties that are given by our
Creator. No man, government or other has any right whatsoever to
take them away. The U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the
state of Tennessee merely guarantee that government will respect and
defend those rights.

The column sounded like government is gracious enough to give us
free speech. I'm sure it was just an oversight, but it sounds like
you're trying to bow to the government or something.

Since government should not and does not have that kind of power, it
does not and cannot grant anything. Period.

Stunningly, many on the right wing don't believe in the American
virtues of freedom and liberty — and would love to have the power to
suppress others.

Please don't give them any more ideas.

H. PETE NORRIS
Knoxville
