My letter to the editor

My letter to the editor was published today in the Kingsport Times
News. It has already elicted a few comments from coworkers.

Libertarians a third option

Four Kingsport residents recently returned from Atlanta, where we
attended the Libertarian National Convention as delegates for the
state. As a first-time attendee it was an energizing experience.
Never have I been in such a large group of individuals dedicated to
the cause of liberty and freedom. The Libertarian Party is America's
third largest with more candidates in office than all other minor
parties combined. The Libertarian Party has as the two cornerstones
of its philosophy the ideas of individual liberty and personal
responsibility. It is the party of limited government; a party which
believes that the federal government should be once again bound to
its constitutional limits. It is a party which believes that
capitalism is the only economic system supported by the ideas of
liberty and freedom. It is a party that refuses to compromise on the
Bill of Rights, including the Second Amendment. The convention
nominated our presidential candidate, and unlike the two major
parties, nothing was decided going into the convention. After three
exciting ballots, Michael Badnarik, a Texas computer programmer and
constitutional scholar, was selected. Badnarik was the favorite among
the Tennessee delegation.

Now comes the difficult task of getting our message out and
attempting to make as many people as possible aware that there is a
third option. We are not going to turn our country around until those
who believe in smaller government stop wasting their vote by
supporting a party that gives lip service to smaller government while
it grows at an unprecedented rate. On the other hand, Libertarians do
not have to win a presidential election in order to make a change. A
five percent showing in the presidential race would inform those in
power that people are waking up to the ideas of liberty.
