I would like to congratulate the U.S. Senate for wisely choosing to block the ill-conceived constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, and I would especially like to commend the six Republican senators who held principle above politics.
Proponents can frame the issue in whatever terms they like, but at the core this is simply an attempt to encode bigotry, discrimination and the religious opinions of one group into our nation's law, and as such goes against everything this country was founded to protect. It is a violation of religious freedom, it is a violation of states' rights (which I thought conservatives were supposed to champion), and most importantly, it is a violation of individual human rights and the very notion of equality under the law.
I am deeply ashamed that both Tennessee Sens. Frist and Alexander supported this ghastly bill (Political Notes, July 15). The principle of limited government has no natural connection to oppression and intolerance, and I am grateful that those of us who understand this fact will have the option of choosing Libertarian Michael Badnarik for president this November.
