Shelby County does it again..Go Tayloe! .......... Wednesday, March 12, 2003 Letters to the Editor Commercial Appeal Box 334 Memphis TN 38101 I must disagree with David Water's column in today's (12-March-03) Commercial Appeal concerning sprawl. People freely choosing to live where they wish and developers and homebuilders providing what these people want is a good thing. Smart Growth just means more government regulations and control. Even if "smart growth" resulted in houses and subdivisions that were somehow defined as "better" or more attractive architecturally, they would have a proportionate loss of a much greater quality: Freedom. Consider the quality of most governments that mankind has been able to produce in the last 5,000 years. Did the average citizen feel more burden over the centuries from poor architecture and unplanned land use or from excessive government? The answer is easy. The easy and simple solution to this problem is always ignored: Anyone who wishes can buy any land they want and simply develop it in a "smart" way or leave it undeveloped. Yes, money is a problem, but private property is how we as a nation have decided that the best use of assets shall be ensured. Tayloe Nickey Chairman, Libertarian Party of Shelby County
